The Importance Of The Temptation Of Christ
New American Standard Bible Version
(based on a Bible study led by Darrel Cline)
Lesson 1: The First Temptation (according to the Gospel of Matthew)
1-1. How was Jesus brought into the desert?
He was led by the Spirit.
1-2. Why?
To be tempted by the devil.
1-3. How many days did Jesus fast?
Forty.
1-4. Why would Matthew include "nights"?
To assure us that Jesus did not eat at all for forty full days.
1-5. Why would Matthew write, "He was hungry." ?
To show that Jesus was hungry - an attribute of man not God.
1-6. Who is the "one" that has been tempted in every way?
Jesus
1-7. In Matthew 4:3 when Satan asked, "If you are the Son of God.." What was Satan questioning?
If Jesus was God's Son.
1-8. When Satan said, "command that stones become bread." How was this temptation like that of Adam and Eve? (What human weakness did Satan appeal to?)
Hunger
1-9. Would the Father give Jesus a stone if Jesus asked for bread?
No.
1-10. What was Jesus' food?
To do the will of God to accomplish His work.
1-11. What is meant by "It is written:?"
It is the written Word of God - in this case the Old Testament.
1-12. In verse 1, who made a promise to whom?
God promised their forefathers
1-13. In verse 2, who led the people in the desert for forty years?
God.
1-14. Why?
to humble, test, know what was in their heart, and see if they would keep the commandants.
1-15. Who humbled them?
God.
1-16. After they were humbled, they became hungry, then God provided for them by giving them manna. What was God teaching them?
"...man does not live by bread alone but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord."
1-17. Looking at the specific detail in verse three, the words, "every word" are written. Consider the importance of "every." Why is every important?
to show that every single word is important.
